HK$ 150 - 200
Basement, 39 Staunton St, Central, Hong Kong
Best place in Hong Kong, the vines are off the charts.
An intimate and relaxed bar with excellent music. But it was almost impossible to find!! It's not accessed from Staunton Street as the address would make you think, but through a dark lane off of Peel Street. There is a black door with no sign or anything to suggest there is a bar in there, but try the doorbell after 8.30 pm or so and someone will open. We paid $200 cash to enter and the fee includes a drink. The drinks are limited though, for example they did not even have dark rum. All worth it for the amazing live jazz!
Well, as a jazz artist myself I think Chez Trente is one of the places that has good ingredients, but none of them actually match. The place is just a small loft where artists play under the stairs and the music quality is ok. The songs played are always the same mainstream standards that don’t add anything new. The atmosphere feels more like a wannabe place with wannabe “connoisseur” that can’t understand that Bossa Nova is Brazilian, sung in Portuguese and not in Spanish) Well, at least Moanin’ was ok performed. If Bobby Timmons would be proud? Of course not, but well, it’s what it is
Quite challenging to find the place. The atmosphere and music was great
